I have done this myself,at first before understanding how to synchronize my text messaging preferences.
I'm not sure how all phones are,but my nextel needs to be set to what you want.

I have a funny feeling that the messages that you are refering to are not meant to be text. They are meant to be, usually funny, text images. Take your time and look at the text at different angles. You will see the picture eventually. Think of Yahoo's icons! You can either click on them or you can type the icon in yourself. You know what a :-) is, that is a simple text image (smiley). Go look at your messages again but try to see the full image and not individual lines.

Either they are meant to be ASCII images - using letters to form images but was not shown properly on your phone OR it's a foreign code your phone doesn't recognize (ie. Chinese / Japanese)
