Hi. I'm 8 1/2 weeks pregnant and since yesterday morning I've had very bad lower back ache. I have had siatica in the past and this feels just like that. I've not had any cramps or bleeding so I don't think it's a miscarriage or anything (hoping not). Just wondered if anyone else has had this so early on and, if so, what they did about it? Should I be worried or is it normal?

Yes, it's fairly common; I got this really early in pregnancy, sciatica on the left side. Best thing for this is massage, right from the source (for me, it's a spot about four inches below my waist, on the left side - you can tell by poking around!), down the hip and thigh. Just enlist your husband to do this regularly!
Mine got so bad I had to see an Asian specialist (orthopedics) who actually did accupressure.
See a doc, don't sit in one place too long, don't walk too far at once... and he'll give you some exercises which help.

I had it too and boy do I pity you! It felt horrible. Fortunately the sharp edgey pain subsided after a couple of weeks. Now I am 25 weeks and just incredibly sore. The siatica isn't bad but the rest of my back is constantly achey. Warm baths, Tylenol & my husband's massages have helped. Sleeping takes it's toll though. I wake up sore everyday.
Good luck hun.

I don't know for sure if it's a sign of pregnancy but I am 13 weeks pregnant and sometimes my lower back/right hip hurts so bad that I can't even walk. I am not sure if that's a sign or symptom though. So I am curious to see what answers you get! Good Luck!

well i wouldnt be worried unless its pain that you cant bare!
Im currently 18 weeks... in febuary i had a bad car accident and stuffed my back bad, i fell pregnant 2 months after that and felt pain even since day one but it has only gotten worse,... if im washing up at the sink or leaning over for longer than a few minutes it grabs me and im uncomfortable at any angle for hours at a time until i lay down flat for a while..
the best advice i could give you is taking a hot shower or gettting ur mum/ boyfriend/ friend to rub deep heat on your back, or even vix!
ican promise u that it wont take away every bit of pain but it at least helps!
good luck

I also have horrible back ache..specially upper back. I don't know what it is but it really sucks. I feel like I can't even go to bed comfortably. I wouldn't worry about it being a miscarriage though.

Yes it is related to your pregnancy. Your body is surging with hormones, specifically progesterone. This relaxes your joints and can cause your backache. You should worry if you develop a fever, bleeding, cramping or if you have pain or burning with urination.

I had backache in my pregnancy. It's normal, since your body is adjusting to having a weight of a baby to support as well.

Just take lots of hot baths to ease the pain, and rest alot.

Unlikely to be related to your preg this early as the back ache people experience is from carrying all your extra weight in front. I suspect it is how you have slept. If you are worried then call your midwife and get her to check you over.

I had it. Ive heard a lot of women who have. I dont honestly know why, if its just relaxin in our pregnant bodies, or the pressure of changes inside.

Whatever it is, it is a common complaint. I just did alot of stretches. Swimming helps too.
