India has top class 'individual' performers but they rarely play well as a team. If the batting clicks, the bowlers fail and vice versa. Rarely does it happen that the batting as well as the bowling clicks in the same match and that is when India manages to win matches.
This is where the foreign coaches come in. Foreign teams rely on teamwork even if they don't have great individual players. Look at New Zealand for example. For many years, they don't have stars in their team and most of their team was made of bits and pieces player (what i mean is that their batting averages would come nowhere close to Indian players' averages). Inspite of that, they managed to be lot more consistent than the Indian team.
This is why India needs a foreign coach. To make the big stars understand the importance of working in a team!
Further, a great bowler/batsmen would not necessarily make a great coach! At the top level, everyone knows how to bowl or bat. What matters is tactics, strategy and team work. Indian's are too obsessed with politics to concentrate on important matters to the team.
