If you are trying out an online scan or a trial version of some sort of antispy or antivirus program and it shows you 655 files that are infected and the only way it'll get rid of them is to register or purchase the program.....you may not have any files that are actually infected......it is often a ploy by these companies to get you to buy their software. Most likely what the scan is findind is altered files and folders or even old programs that aren't fully uninstalled....since there are left over files and settings for those programs and no reall attachment to anything else they could be read as "bad files". Go to http://www.download.com and have a look at the top 50 software titles....all the security products you need are there, and most of them are free. Install, update and scan away.

If you are looking to clean your system, then yes you need anit-virus and antispyware as all have said. The free Anti-virus are good but not as good as the best pay one. I use the free ones, but keep in mind this fact. See PCWorld link below. If you cannot afford the best one, you still want to get the free one as they are good just not the best.

As for spyware removal, the list has a few the other answers have mentioned. My personal favorite recipe is Lavasoft Ad-Aware Personal, SpyBot Search and Destroy and Microsoft Defender. It is good to run all three as they have different engines and heuristics. I like Defender as it is free and runs all the time to prevent drive-by installs of spyware. Same rules apply here: Free are not quite as good as bough programs but do a very good job when combined.

I recommend you boot into safe mode (hit F8 before the windows logo appears) so that most if not all of these programs are not running. Once in safe mode run the tools and remove what you can. Good luck!

The free version of AVG is an antivirus but it does not include antispyware or adware remover so that wouldn't work for you if you have that on your computer already. Try:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
http://macrovirus.com/?hop=congoman&gclid=CK37m9DL1o0CFSCTWAod7WvhmQ
I know the avast one is an antivirus and has a adware and spyware shield but don't know if it removes them. I think macrovirus would be best since it has antispyware and adware remover.

Go to trend micro housecall. This is free and will scan your computer and get rid of any nasties. You can only use this facility when you are online. You would be very sensible to get some other protection. I would suggest ZoneAlarm firewall and AVG anti-virus. Both have free downloads.

You're reading the crap that advertisers are placing on your PC. It's scare tactics to sell you their software.

I get those occasionally but ignore them. I bit once and "I had 655 contaminated files".
It's bullshit.
