Man's deepest penetration into the Earth's crust is a geological borehole near Zapolarny in the Kola peninsula in Arctic Russia, begun on May 24 1970 and reported in April 1992 to have surpassed a depth of 40,230 feet (12,262 meters). The eventual target of 45,000 feet was expected in 1995; whether they made it I can not find out. That is about 7 miles.

On Jan. 23, 1960 Lt. Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard reached the depth of 35, 813 ft (6.7 miles ) in the Marianas Trench aboard the U.S. Navy Bathyscaphe "Trieste" . Since the radius of the Earth is roughly 3950 miles, these intrepid explorers reached they reached about .0017 of the distance. The deepest mines on earth don't go much deeper than the South African diamond mines: about 2.5 miles. And NO, its not possible with current or forseeable technology to reach the center, although strictly Its not theoretically IMPOSSIBLE

I don't think it is possible because of the dangerous gases that can be found on certain depths,not to mention the heat is getting more and more unbearable because of the lava that floats beneath us.It could be done only with some super-protectional suit,but you would still have the problem of solid rocks that would have to be penetrated with some really awesome machinery that we don't possess.But who knows,technology is getting better and better,maybe we do it by 3000.

I don't think any one has gone more than a few kilometers below the surface and it is certainly nnot possible to go to the centre of the earth because the core is molten iron.
