I had some problems with my old car, the alternator, and the mechanic said he would use his faith in that Jesus guy to find the problem.

Heal thy car Jesus! Cast electrons into thy battery! Cause air and fuel to mix! You know it is quite a different guy that casts fire into air and smoke out exhaust. You make that pact with the devil every time combustion causes pistons to move. Heat and brimstone smell out the exhaust. Devil of a time paying off the car, And you damn almighty every time you have a flat or car won't start. Right!
Faith based auto repair! What ever floats that mechanics boat. God has granted my with almost X-Ray vision Just by listening I can see how many pistons there are and all the parts and how they work. From childhood I have taken things apart and put them back tougher again

Faith based auto repair is praying the problem goes away on its own... well that or a priest who works as a mechanic part time. ;) Time to open the yellow pages and find a new mechanic.

Can I recommend "Father Maxwell's 24 Hour Auto Repair?"

Was the alternator the only problem?
In some cases, you need faith, luck, patience and all you got to solve some mechanical problem. In an intermittent problem for example, you can only guess and pray.
When you have faith you have hope and when you have hope you keep trying and don't give up.
If your mechanic does not charge to diagnose a vehicle if he does the work then let his faith be as strong as it can be...
Good luck and god bless!

It means you have to leave your car overnight so he can meditate on the problem.

Or so he can drive it home, which is 65 miles from his shop.

Or (for real), he is suggesting that it's gonna take a miracle to fix your car and it is probably not worth even trying. If your car is old enough, a $300 alternator replacement (part and labor) might be more than the car is worth.

He has no confident in getting the repair job done. There is no faith based as it concern safety to the driver, the passengers and other road users. Time to look for someone else.
