My husband and I decided last month to start trying to have a baby. I'm wondering if it's necessary to take pre-natal vitamins already... one of my friends is doing this. Also any other info you could impart on topic would be great. Thanks in advance!

I have been TTC for 15months and have been on prenatal vitamins the whole time. The are good for a woman if she is trying to conceive or not. It is recommended to start them at least 3months before you try. This way you have built up enough for the baby to start growing healthy and it wont hurt you. The baby sucks everything from you when it starts to grow and if you body isn't ready then it could really effect you. I also recommend to take an extra amount of folic acid. Most pregnancy's don't make it because the folic acid is lacking and the baby doesn't have enough to implant its self. I hope this helps.

Absolutely tell your doctor that you are TTC and get a script for iron and folic acid/folate supplements. Folate is proven to help prevent neural tube defects such a spinabifida and other illnesses. when you take iron also make sure that you have vitamin c (orange juice, fresh oranges or vitamine c tablets) as it helps the body to absorb the iron.

All round tablets that you can buy from the supermarket are great too like ELEVIT. it gives you all you need and more and shoud be taken while TTC, pregnant and breastfeeding.
But speak to your doctor. they can do a blood test and see if there is anything you are missing and should be taking for full body wellness

Good luck and there's some baby dust coming your way!!

YES! My doctor prescribed them when i told her I wanted to try to start getting pregnant. She said the reason was that the baby has already started to grow before you will know you are pregnant (at the day of your missed period, the baby would be about 2 weeks old). Also, she told me that she actually recommends that ALL women of child-bearing age take them, because at least 1/2 of all pregnancies are unplanned. They certainly can't hurt you-they just give you extra nutrients, and the folic acid is very important to prevent neural tube defects. You can buy them at the grocery store, but most of the over-the-counter ones don't have nearly enough folic acid. I would ask your doctor for a prescription. Good luck!

Pre-natal vitamins including folate should be taken if you are thinking of having a baby, try an ovulation kit if you are not sure when you are ovulating, and just see how it goes for a while and have fun.
