I do all the time; I haven't worn footwear for over ten years. It's not gross or dangerous, feet get very tough very quickly and they're fully washable. Nor is it against the law; even in the US, in spite of persistent myths, there are NO laws requiring footwear in stores or restaurants, insurance companies don't require or even recommend footwear for customers and it's not against the law to drive barefoot. In other countries even the myths don't exist; here in the Netherlands I have never even seen a 'no shoes, no shirts, no service' sign, nor on my trips to Belgium & Scotland. But even in the US, not all stores carry such *store-based* dress codes; quite a few stores have dress codes but many others don't. You just have to shop around a little.

Going to the store barefoot is perfectly fine based on any objective measure. The risks of injury associated with going barefoot are far less than the risks associated with, for example, wearing high heels. Further, while many discuss the risks of infection and the like, anyone who spends a significant time barefoot will tell you that these fears are essentially unsubstantiated. The above being said, there is no denying that many have an unfounded "ick" factor that may make going barefoot in a grocery store taboo in many societies. As to what's "appropriate," I suspect that's a matter of taste, but I see nothing wrong with it myself. Still, many grocers in my area prohibit barefooters from shopping in their stores.

I used to do a lot of marketing while barefoot. But after being yelled at by store management about "store policy" I seem to be forced to wear shoes when shopping.
Target stores are about the only place where I have never encountered any problems with my bare feet.
So, I vote with my feet. I don't shop regularly where my bare feet are not allowed. Some shops have lost my business entirely.
