Since you (or your child) are obviously new to the sport, you can "demo" a racquet from your local tennis club or sporting goods store (the "mart" stores won't let you do that, though!). Demo's are rarely more than $5, and most will give you your money back when you return it (ask first!!!). Just keep in mind that demo racquets are used, and most likely, not in good shape. The strings will be looser than new strings, so you'll have to deal with that, too (looser strings give more power, but, for a new player, it isn't going to make that much of a difference).
The racquet should be comfortable in your hand (IMHO, the grip is the single most important part of the racquet; if you can't hold it correctly, you're not going to play well!), and easy to hold, weight-wise. A tennis pro or tennis retailer can help you with the grip (many sporting goods salespeople know little if anything about grips!). The weight is up to you!
Don't worry about brand names or types or styles, for now, except that you should avoid "junior" racquets, which are meant for children under 12, though, IMHO, they shouldn't be used by anyone! Comfort is key for now.
You shouldn't have any problem finding a decent, prestrung racquet for under $75. Many stores have unadvertised specials well below that! Avoid buying "demos", because they may have cracked frames. Unused close-outs are fine.
And, whether this is for an adult or kid, please remember that the first rule of tennis is to have fun! =:)

There are Prince, Wilson, Head, Babolat, and there some more but I can't think of them right now. I suggest using Wilson. I have the a Wilson racket it costs $70... If you want some racket with cheap price (which I suggest beginners use), you can go to a shop which have a racket sale or Target store. You can pick one up and start with it because if you buy an expensive one, you MAY be NOT interested in Tennis and the expensive racket would be a waste and of course you would haven't known you rplaying style yet.

Forget the brand names, half of them are dead already.

Great racket. And it isn't one of those **** K-Mart rackets. True tennis players laugh their asses off at people who buy those rackets you find at Big 5, K-Mart, Walmart, and all those other marts and cheap stores.
Rackets that suits beginners best? I'd say wood rackets are awesome. Sadly I haven't been privileged enough to get my hands on one to try it out.
Also, if you didn't notice, that link lists plenty of brands, including the important ones and some dead ones.

A squash racket appears to have a longer handle and the head is smaller. The stringing is very similar and the tension on the strings is made to suit the individual player. The squash ball is smaller and softer than a tennis ball and can have different degrees of bounce according to the colour of the spot on the ball.

This are the top five brands Dunlop, Wilson, Head, Prince and Yonex. Any one of this will do as a beginner raquet but make sure to get at least 110 head frame since your a beginner and dont't go spending to much money on your first raquet like no more than 50$.
