A picture that Julian made at school.

John did that a couple of times, make up songs from pictures. For the Benefit of Mr. Kite was a circus flyer.

Yeah, its supposedly about L.S.D...
But the Beatles denied it, apparently siting it was more in reference to one of Julian lennons pre-school drawings.. Where he drew a girl from school.' Lucy' in the Sky with Diamonds...

I got this off wikipedia for ya... Its way too long to cut and paste the whole thing.. But heres a bit of it...

"The lyrics of the song — which are commonly believed to be about an acid trip — feature image-laden verses which present an overtly psychedelic travelogue, describing a boat trip through a fantastic land of "rocking horse people", "newspaper taxis" and "marshmallow pies", alternating with chorus sections which simply repeat the song's title. The Beatles, however, have steadily maintained that the initials of the title forming the word "LSD" (Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) is mere coincidence, as the title is taken from a drawing by a young Julian Lennon.

Session tapes from the initial March 1, 1967 recording of this song reveal that John originally sang the line "Cellophane flowers of yellow and green" as a broken phrase, but Paul suggested that he sing it more fluidly, thus improving the song."

I like it non the less!!. I always find the non sensical facinating.

xx

Only John Lennon really knew the truth and he's taken the secret with him. The best guess is that both above answers are partly true - Julian Lennon did draw a picture entitled 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds', but Lennon also noticed the LSD link and fused the two together.

Look at the Wikipedia article - it's quite interesting.

it is much disputed whether LSD had a factor in the lyrical process or not. Diamond was a horse that belonged to Paul McCartney's daughter. I forget if it was a dream or what, but he pictured Diamond in the sky, and that's where he got the idea for the song.
