Do you actually know anything about web design now? If not you have a long road ahead of you.
Me, I'd say no. Many people spend years learning web design before even stepping into the business world. Even if you are to learn the basics of everything within five months that will leave you no time to put out the appropriate advertising and feelers out there for either starting your business or getting a job with an existing company.
If it's something that you really want to do, then I say take your time and do it well,.

Here's what you should learn to become a superb web designer: 1. HTML 2. CSS 3. Javascript 4. AJAX 5. PHP 6. SQL 7. Unix / Linux operating systems Stay away from software that "builds" it for you, if you are a superb web designer, you don't need it.

Yes, 5 months is a good enough time to be a web designer if you are creative and put in hard work. Developing e-commerce sites will take so more time as you will have to learn quite a bit of programming and intrinsics of the web. If you have the will, you have the way :) All the best !

No. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if you want to be a respected web designer with actual skill and ability this is not enough time. It takes years to hone the craft learn on-the-job. I advise becoming an apprentice or working under a professional for a year. Anyone telling you anything else is probably not a professional and have alternative motives.

Creativity and knowledge. Yes, you can become a web designer in 5 months, but it will take longer to be come a respected professional web designer, may take years for that.
What you will need to get started as a web-designer is:
- skills with (x/d)html, css, php, mysql
- depending on your ability to design using notepad, you may want to invest in Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash
- A good web host / domain name to set up your initial site.
- skills to develop an e-commerce site (php/mysql)
business brochure websites will be the easiest as 9 times out of 10 they will be simple HTML based sitse with maybe some flash 'interactivity'.
Take a few courses in the 5 months, read a few tutorials. All teh software mentioned above you can download for free (with free trials) from the respective companies who developed them.
To get started, you need to build up a portfolio as no business will hire you unless you can prove your skills. Try canvasing some local businesses who don';t have a web prescense and offer your services for free or for a minimal cost to build up a portfolio.
Once you have an online prescense built up, then offers will more than likely come your way.
Web design is a highly creative job which can be very rewarding (financnially too) but very difficult to break into the big-time with it. Good luck though!

Good advices from Sullivan: follow them!
Avoid at all costs so-called "Web editors" (Dreamweaver etc): they make very crap and unmaintainable code.
In five months?
Well, nowadays, total "***" call themselves Web Designers after playing with a small "pagemaker" after a few days.
So, yes, you could be a web designer in five months, but you will NOT be a good one (unless you are a genius of some sort).
I have designed websites since the early 1990s, at the birth of the web, and full time since 1999.
I write in all existing languages.
I am still learning something new every day.
I still would not call myself a "web designer": there are too many things I do not know.
Good luck in a very hard market.

Hi
Yes you can, it is more than enough
1.First learn HTML, it is very easy really very easy (10 days)
2.Second learn PHP which is slightly more difficult (30 days)
3.Learn CSS (which is easier than Html) ( 5 days)
4.Get familiar with some terms like e-commerce, SSL, (10 days as common knowledge not to be expert)
5.Get some knowledge just as a back ground, of Java, xml, browsers behavior, Flash, Photoshop, servers, MySQL ( 2 months)
6.Use WYSIWYG software at first ( like FrontPage, dreemweaver) ( 6 days)
7.Get some training in design, colors, common taste of beauty (which is the most difficult part) ( will keep learning forever)
My advice
Try to make as much websites as you can, this will give you experience, do NOT hesitate to publish your work even if you don't think that it is good, because that feeling of incomplete will remain there for ever
That’s all what you need
Good luck
