i cashed my paycheck, paid all my bills, put gas in the car, bought some food, AND i still have some money left over. what's wrong with this picture?

It is time for you to seriously look for whatever you didn't pay!
I am betting there is a statement from some forgotten account, or... you have just jinxed yourself and your cars innards are right now headed for some type of mechanical malady.
I hate to wish that on anyone, but my trip to Germany got cancelled thanks to my car needing work. It sensed a momentary surplus in my personal finances and greedily took care of that!
