Now, that's an old story...It begins with ancient Greeks' myth about Daedalus and his son Icarus...According to legend, they both developed wings, which contained waxed feathers. When Icarus went too high, approaching the sun too closely, his wings melted because of the sun heat, so he fell and is considered first victim of flying ( if only in fiction stories )...
In 18th century a German Otto Lillienthal ( I'm not sure about spelling here ) developed first gliders that actually flew ( not much more than a few meters, but those were first successful flights performed by any human )...Eventually he got killed, just like many other pioneers of aviation...
As the matter of fact, first successful flight in history was performed by two French aviators in a balloon using hot air. That kind of flying of course is an entirely different story, those aerostats ( as science call them ) being lighter than air ( as we know from phisics hot air is lighter than the cold air ). The principle is widely in use even nowadays by hot - air driven baloons...
Flying an device heavier than air proved much more of an issue...There were many unsuccesful and even tragical events in which young enthusiasts lost their lifes, until finaly one day in early december Wright brothers of North Carolina entered history with the Flyer, first ever succesful self propeled fliing device...
