KG chose number 5 because he was drafted at 5 in the year he was taken. And yes 21 is retired with the celtic. The number is owned Bill Sharman. I personally would of loved for KG to get 21. but aye, the number doesnt make you. This team is going to be so exciting. IM SMILING RIGHT NOW!!

The Celtics have a ton of numbers retired with so many Hall of Famers and players who have won 5 or more NBA rings as contibutors.
#5 is pretty close to #6 which was Boston's all time rebound per game over a career champ in Bill Russell.

As 21 has been retired by Boston, Garnett checked out what was available and who had worn what in the past. Being heavily impressed with how articulate Bill Walton is, Garnett chose 5, which Walton had worn for the Celtics in the mid-'80s.

i love all these theory's on why he picked #5, hmmm let me see if i have one. oh yeah he picked 5 because when he was little he had 7 pet turtles and one ran away and the other one got pregnant and had 5 baby turtles that laid 5 golden eggs and one of the golden eggs had magical basketball powers and made K.G. grow to be very tall and gave him a great mid range jump shot and when he was in high school the turtles all died and when he put them under his pillow the turtle fairy came and left him $5, so that is why he will wear #5 for the celtics. oh yeah and that the fact that there is not many numbers left to pick unless you want to be a douche bag and wear some queer number like 45!!!
