I agree, go with a 7600GT minimum, it's a nice jump in performance from the 7300 series. You can find those cards on NewEgg for around $75 after rebate, which is pretty cheap.

There are plenty of better cards if you're spending $150-$250 but that's an entirely different price range than what you're looking at, so ignore all the talk about 8000 series cards and new ATI DirectX10 cards, etc.

Wouldn't look at either of those two choices. I have had both a 7300 and 7600GS. The 7300 is not a gamer card. It is way way better than onboard but not great. The 7600GS is a much much better card than the 7300 but still not my first choice.

If I was going to buy a card I would look at two serious contenders.

1. An Nvidia 8500. It is a lightweight Dx10 card and cheap. I got mind at zipzoomfly.com for $54.99 after mail in rebate. It was about 3x faster than my 7300LS and only a few dollars more. It is not a super power card but an awesome deal for the price.

2. An Nvidia 8600GTS. Will stomp on any of the budget 7600GS or 7600GT's and have some horsepower for future gaming at a price tag in the $160 range.

Sure you could go with an 8600GT but then you are more expensive than the 8500 and less power than the GTS so I'd either splurge for the better one or cheap out on a decent one.

Oh, and the 8400 won't save you much money and is even less power than the 8500 so I would stay away from that one.

And just so you know, the ATI 2400 wouldn't have the power you want. The ATI 2600 would, but the Nvidia is cheaper for the same horsepower and the ATI 2900 is expensive.

Happy video card hunting

you can get a ati x1300 or x700 pci express video card. they are good as well. if you are going to be a gamer i suggest you to upgrade the ram as well. try to get as high as 768mb of ram. only for gaming reasons.

Cheap option - 7300GT ddr3. Its 3D Mark 05 score would be more than double that of your current card.

Faster and "future proof" option - 8600GT (overclocked versions) - Its 3D Mark 05 score would be more than 5x that of your current card.

Do NOT be attracted by cards w/ 512Mb ddr2 (slow). You will be disappointed later.

7600GT

If you are going to upgrade, it's a worthwhile investment to buy a directx10 card such as the 86000GT and above. Future proof yourself now and save $$$.
