John Elway holds a record i know of that all you might not know.He holds the all time sack record for a QB,must not a been to nimble on his feet during the rush
Brett Favre when it is all said and done will go down as the best there's ever was
Payton Manning has got a lot more to do to catch up with Favre, and out of his own mouth"I ant gaining any ground on Favre".
and Joe Montana holds the record for most over rated QB of all time with his 5 to 10 yard passing ability"much like tom Brady",but if that's all the arm you got that's it.
Superbowl Rings are a team effort and do not com into play when judging the individual talent of a single player.

This question is very arbitrary: what are you looking for? records? championships? intangibles? ability to win the big game? depends on a lot of factors.
I would have to go with my own choices and say that I look at all of those and incorporate them into my list.
#1-Joe Montana- won all the big games and has the guts of few guys
#2- Brett Favre- may be the best when retires (if that ever happens)
#3- John Elway- finally got that ring and also is tops in most passing categories
Marino has the records but not the ring, so he must not be that great. Kind of like Ty Detmer having all thos NCAA records that the guy from Hawaii is beating. Records are made to be broken and should not jsutify the "Best Ever".

1Brett Favre-
The iron man of football. Shatters the record for most consecutive starts by a QB. will break dan marinos passing records and will break elways win record after this season. the only 3 time MVP. Has had the most success with such little talent around him offensivly ( what happend to Freeman when he left Green bay.)
#2 Dan Marino-
Currently holds the records for TDs and passing yards. Third Winningest QB at the end of this season. Some talent around him but not enough. Although he does not have a ring he has played in one superbowl ( i don't really count superbowls for greatness as Football is a TEAM game.)
#3 Joe Montana-
He was very Calm underpressure and was a great clutch player. Although his states are not the greatest he was a winner. I put him at third because much of his success was in part due to the great team that surrounded him. Good Player but would not put him at the best.
#4 John Elway-
After this season he will be the second winningest QB in history. He has been to 5 superbowls with 2 wins. Did not have as much talent as some other teams through the majority of his carreer.
#5 Steve Young-
He had some huge shoes to fill when he had to take over for Joe Montana and he did it well. he handled the pressure of Montanas successor very well by bringing the 49ers to the superbowl. had a good surrounding cast but with Rice getting older he didn't have as much talent as Montana had and still played well.

Brett Favre without a doubt, he is going to or already has broken all passing records, he has the most consecutive starts for a QB, and he has 3 MVP awards, 2 Consecutive.
Peyton Manning will not come close to what Favre has accomplished once Harrison is gone.
oh and by the way, its Fran Tarkenton

John Elway is the best QB of all-time! He did the most with less talent than most of the other great QB's! Elway finally won when he got some talented players around him...if Elway would have had a Jerry Rice or Emmitt Smith earlier in his career he would have won more Super Bowls.

Brett Favre easily. When you break the consecutive game streak, passing yards, passing TD's, and wins for a single player you are the best.

I'll tell you who will be the best ever, as much as I hate to admit it....Peyton Manning. He'll retire after obliterating every passing record in the nfl and winning about 2 more rings.
