Math must have been different when I was going to school. I need to learn the new monetary system. I get confused when going into stores and seeing some items for .50c while others that should cost less are 5c. Also, whats up with having items on sale for 110% off?

The answer is that the store clerks didn't pay much attention to math in school!

Fifty cents and five cents should be written as follows (I don't have a cent symbol on my keyboard, so have used "c" as you did):
50c ; 5c - - - or
$.50 and $.05

500 cents is $5.00 and a half cent is $.005 or .5c

Please let me know where there is a sale with 110% off! I am going there and demand that I be given the item free plus be paid 10% of its price!

P.S. I shouldn't have answered the original question because I am not that "anyone who thinks .50c is fifty cents!"

500 cents =$5.00 (5 dollars) because there are 100 cents or pennies to 1 dollar. The ".50 cent" sign is totally wrong because we have not had 1/2 cents in the United States since 1857 (began in 1793, and were made of nearly pure copper). Technically 50 cents should written out as 0.50 and 5 cents as 0.05. As for the 110%--people think they are giving you a bargain if they make it more than 100%. But, in a percentage exercise on www.mathgoodies.com, it shows 150% being written as 1.50 . I would assume that a 110% off-sale would mean items' prices are totally reduced to nothing plus an extra 10%. LOL Seriously though, "percent" is from the Latin PER CENTUM which means "parts per 100", and a percentage is a ratio whose second term is 100 and written as a fraction (example=the ratio 77:100=77/100=77%). Since 0.01 equals 1 cent, half of that would be 0.005 (you divide 0.01 by 2 to get your half).

technically, since one dollar is $1.00 and ninety-nine cents can be notated as 99¢ or $.99, .50¢ is one-half of one cent.

if you want to notate fifty cents it is $.50 or 50¢. five hundred cents can be 500¢ or $5.00

don't know about the 110% off. either it's a typo or they're giving stuff away
