What your Brother did were good intentions, but this could have been handled differently. Your brother could have approached your dad first and told him what he was doing was hurting or could possibly hurt not only your mom but the marriage. Most kids at his age are still thinking very logical. In my opinion I don't believe that children his age really know the concept of what is ethical or not. Most kids at his age still only know to distinguish things by good or bad or right or wrong by a gut feeling but can not rationalize things really well. I don't put any blame on your brother for trying to do the right thing. On the other hand your parents may have not communicated in a healthy way or even at all, which many times what strains relationsips. Best wishes to you and your family.

What is morally right and what is morally wrong is very hard sometimes to draw a line separating the two especially nowadays these rights and wrongs are consistently changing.........the way i would make a decision from experience is to weigh out the pros and cons of conducting such act. Sometime what is right may not be the best solution under some circumstances. Sometime if i think about it and if i do the right thing would harm or cause trouble for someone more than it would helping them and yes i would decide to keep quiet.
But if i feel that by telling i would help that someone out for example a drug user i usually would approach the person who is wrong myself first than have others know about it.
For example in case of your dad i would talk to him about it first rather than have a thrid person involve. That way I can help your dad (like maybe not to watch porn with a young children around or to be more discreet about it). It is also more responsible to it this way. You could spare your mom unnnecessary hurt and resolve the problem if it is a major thing with your dad giving him to a certain extent the dignity of being human and have the some responsibility for his actions.

The "right" thing can only be defined in terms or moral, ethical or legal codes. So, by definition, something cannot be "right" (correct) if it violates those codes.
If the codes are in conflict -- then it becomes a matter of which code you hold most important.
In your example, his actions were ethical. But they were disruptive, hence arguably against the moral imperative to promote harmony in the family -- but that's really a matter of how you define the moral rules of the family -- some prefer honesty to harmony.

He should have approached his father privately and not in front of your mother. He could have satisfied both his moral and ethical conscience without involving your mother. I'm sorry for the fight your parents got into because of your brother's horrible mistake. I hope he has learned from it.

No. I don't know about your brother's ethics or yours. I don't agree that it was ethical to rat out one parent to the other about something that was none of his concern.
But yeah, sometimes the right thing is what works, not what you believe is good.

morals and ethics are defined as the right thing to do. So if it wasnt right for your brother to rat out your dad then it wasnt the moral and ethical thing to do.

I think the situation should dictate what is right. A universal law doesn't apply.
