We are a democratic republic. Niether a democracy or a republic. It is complicated, but to put i simply: We, as a people elect officials to make decisions for our country. We do not make the decisions.
If you want shoulds or shouldnts, I believe the people in our country need more say now then they have. We do not need to be a pure democracy, but we should have more say as a people. Not in the making of decisions, but in the electing of officials. Our country uses the electoral congress to vote in the "leader" of our country. Therefore, the person elected by the people (popular vote) is not always elected as president. I.E. the 2000 presidential election.

Well, we spread the general idea of democracy in hopes of helping the people of other countries. We are not spreading the idea of pure democracy or "mob rule" as you put it. We simply want poeple to have a say in their government. To be lead ina fair manner. Dictatorships and absolute monarchies and the like are unfair to the people of a country. In order to help those people, we attempt to democratize when we can. Now, obviously there are many motives for attempting to universalize democracy, but i would like to think helping people around the world would be our main goal.

The USA is a democratic republic -- not a pure (polyarchal) democracy. Democracy includes any model where the ultimate political power rests in the people -- whether they exercise that directly, or through intermediary representatives and elected officials.

And we are that way because our Constitution mandates that we elect officers to make decisions for us.

The US is not a democracy.

It is a Democratic Republic.

We elect leaders to make and enforce laws.

A true democracy is similar to a mob with more order.
