I want to play a joke on my friend by sending her a bunch of dirt in the mail without a return address. The thing is, I plan to construct a 12"6 envelope, and pack the dirt in it. How many stamps would it take to mail an envelope that weighs a pound? Two pounds? And would they even mail a giant envelope? Where can I buy a bunch of stamps?

no idea- but i would love to hear the story behind this (they'll tell you at the post office when you go to mail it- I think you have to go to the post office to mail something like that anyways)

Take it to the post office. If it seems secure enough that it won't fall apart in the mail, they'll take it and send it as a package. Otherwise they'll refuse it. You might consider using a small box instead.

The post office will weigh the package and tell you how much it will cost to send. For rates, look at usps.com and click on "calculate postage" at the top of the screen.
