You don't pray only when death is upon you or someone else. It is not meant for a last ditch effort to be chosen to hopefully go to heaven not hell. Death 's meaning is different & it depends on who you ask to what they'll say. So determining what you believe will be a start. Faith is truly personal and cannot be taken lightly by anyone-you only have yourself in life and in death. So getting in touch with yourself will make you closer to god, as I call him. prayer is a part of that connection. It can allow people to become closer too. It can help heal by bringing a common ground in difficult situations like death. If you aren't sure or you don't care then I am unsure if anyone can inspire you to pray.

god dosnt 'chose ' that we die
god gives us life [think of it as gas ] we get born with all the gas to get us to the others side

praying dosnt give more 'gas' but it can help others get more milage on nthier gas , or inspire the prayed for to find the reserve tank

it is often said we pray for the sake of the living [the dead have thier karma][let the dead tend the dead ] etc

it does make a lot of difference [as a few respondants have said] for the living ,but also to help the living commune closer to god and those soon to see his son

God sometimes uses death to show his miracles...if someone was dying and someone prayed for him, and that person was healed, that could be apart of Gods plan...that miracle would show others the power that God has.

I think that prayer helps in any situation...sure, you may not get the answer you want, but God knows what is best for us in the long run.

yes, god does chose on when it's your time to go. when your were born, he know the time, date, place and everything there is to know about your death.

the point of praying is..MIRACLES DO EXIST! extremely hard to find, but God can work wonders, its amazing on what he can do.

you do have a great point though...but pray, because God promised in the bible..that he would give long lives to people who believe in him, and serve him with their whole heart...you could be diagnosed with cancer and not die for another 10 years because you were true to go(my grandfather, lived til he was 91)

You pray that the Dying get to WHERE they need to go- and remember to put in a good word for YOU, when they meet their Maker! :)

Its good to pray because its a communication between you and him, bringing you closer to him.
Prayers can help in so many ways; my mom died of cancer; the doctors said she didn't have that much to live but with those prayers he gave us one more year to be with her and prepared us and her for her death.
He knows why he does things.

Fidel Castro is dying, but he's still alive regardless of prayers by the Cubans for his demise.

It depends on what you pray for...
I'd pray that the person will pass on without any pain and in complete peace.
