Well, anime comes in different genres, but seeing as you're a Dragonball Z fan, action would probably suit your tastes. Here are some action-y anime that I either like or that have been recommended to me (ones that I actually watch or read the manga will have asterisks beside them and my reasoning in parentheses):
-Naruto* (The anime that drew me into the anime world. However, the most recent chapters get tedious to read. The best parts in my opinion are the Land of Waves, the Chuunin Exams minus the Forest of Death, and the first couple of arcs of Part II)
-Bleach* (I love this one. However, I enjoyed it more in the beginning than in the rest when there was an actual plot. I liked it when Ichigo just went around chasing Hollows for some reason...)
-One Piece (I don't watch this, but I hear it's really good. I'm thinking of starting it one day. However, I'm not completely sure if it's as action-packed as Dragonball.)
-InuYasha (Don't watch this one either, but there are so many fans for it that it must be pretty good. My friend, who is a humongous anime freak, says that it's only okay, but I wouldn't know.)
-Yu Yu Hakusho* (I actually watched this one, but I can't say I enjoyed it that much. No offense to Yu Yu Hakusho fans. Hiei was pretty cool though.)
-Avatar: The Last Airbender (Technically not an anime, but the style is similar, and it's very popular. My other friend, who is an avid South Park fan, actually admitted liking this, which was a surprise to me since anime has never been their thing.)
-Yu-Gi-Oh!* (Not truly an action anime with its card games and whatnot, although it gets more action-y near the end, but it's pretty good. I never really liked the style it was drawn in, and the duels get repetitive after a while, but it was alright in the beginning.)
-Pokemon* (Same as Yu-Gi-Oh! in about every aspect, except instead of card duels, Pokemon battles. It's better for younger kids more than anything, so if you're looking for blood and gore, I would redirect myself towards Bleach, Naruto, Yu Yu Hakusho, or FullMetal Alchemist.)
-FullMetal Alchemist* (This one was kind of depressing, really gory, but probably among the deepest and most interesting. I didn't get too far into the series due to computer problems, but the episodes I did see were very good. It did get rather bloody and violent at parts, and sometimes I almost wanted to cry, but it's really psychological-ish for an action-based anime. It did get confusing and occasionally disturbing, but that made it unique, especially since the animation was so detailed compared to your normal, everyday action anime.)
Honestly, I could go on and on listing action anime, but these are the biggest ones, I think. Or were the biggest ones. In any case, those were the most popular, but I may be forgetting some. As for your question on Dragonball, it has been one of the largest franchises in the anime universe, maybe even THE largest. I may have to check up on that, but yes, I believe it is considered "amazing". Hope this list helped you!

Dragon Ball is the anime the started it all for sure and many have grow up with.
If you want to look at something amazing, even better than naruto, try One Piece. To make it even sweeter, Echiiro Oda, the mangaka for One Piece, really admires DBZ creator Akira Toriyama. He took some of his influences and integrated them into his works to make One Piece.
I would say that One Piece is at par with DBZ in awesomeness and plus there is a cross over manga called One Piece X DBZ epoch.
