When JK said that major characters were going to die, every one supposed it was Hagrid! JK said in a recent interview to Meredith Viera, that Hagrid was the one who took Harry to the Dursleys when his parents were killed. Then he took Harry from them to Hogwarts when he was 11. So he was like the "bearer" and she wanted Hagrid to take Harry from the forest, apparenlty dead, back to Hogwarts. So no, he didnt die, being a half giant doesnt qualify him for immediate death over the other ones!!!

Rowling stated in a recent interview on the Today Show that she never planned to kill Hagrid.

Hagrid raised Aragog, the head spider, so the spiders may have been carrying Hagrid away from the battle to keep him safe.

He's Hagrid he can't be cursed jinxed or hexed and he tough enough to fist fight anyone. Hes not going down.

Uh, why do you ask?? I'm glad he didn't die. The act of such a protective character carrying Harry (whom he believed to be dead) was important.
And enough characters had already died!!! lol

Jo wanted to have him carry out of the woods as he was "dead". He was the one that first introduced him to magic, and was a friend to the end
