I am not really sure. It is very hard to keep your grades up while working. How about asking your parents for a loan for the car and pay them back when you are older? Or tell them you will run errands for them and agree to keep your grades up. Can you work for your parents by cleaning, washing cars, mowing, etc?
Alternatively you could look for a retail job, which would be fun and a lot better than fast food.
Good luck to you. I wanted a car when I was your age too.

your grades have to be good enough to even qualify for a job, so if you got D's and C's, it might be a little hard than people who got A's and B's.
if you feel that you are situated enough to get a job (educational wise) then that's a good first step, then of course you need to balance the schedule between your job and your other activities (Homework, Friends, etc..). they will ask you about your preference on hours, but depending how much business their having, you might not have a choice.
Of course it's best to get a job that is sometime in the afternoon.
it would be best that you could get a job in the summer instead (that's when most businesses are hiring) or holidays like winter break.
but if anything matters, it's good to have a little bit of work experience. that way if you go to college and such, it wont be as hard to find a job (being that many employers go off my experience).

well... in such a case i don't think you're being unreasonable or anything... but your doubts are well-placed... so, try the job thing for a while... if it helped you without interfering negatively in your life then continue, but if it did then quit it and think about some alternative...!
working can not only help you get a car, but also will give you nice experience... i used to have summer jobs all the time which did me real good...
so, just take it easy... try things out... only then you'll know what's best for you... don't pressure yourself too much, yet remember that things in life need patience most of the time and hard earned things are way better than easy stuff...
good luck... lol :)

If you want a car, then yes, you should work. Not to sound old here, but working now helps build a good work ethic that will carry into your career. That really helps. Talk to friends at school and look around yourself for a job that you might like. You might find something that pays more, like sales or such. $280 a week may not seem like much, but that's over $500 a month. You should be able to maintain your car if you budget your income. Another good life lesson to learn.

Well....I can't say that because my parents take care of everything that I need/want.
I've got a job in a hospital making ten bucks an hour, working 24 hours a week, and I only pay gas occasionally... I'm 17, though.
Well. Try and work at a bookstore as a clerk or something. Fast food places are gross, I totally agree.
Or...
Work as a receptionist in a doctors office. It generally pays really well...

Well if you really wanted a job you wouldn't be too picky at what job you want. You are 16. Yea fastfoods make you smell at the end of the shift but it is worth it when you get the paycheck. Atleast know in the future you won't be working there. I wish I had a job when I was 16 as a matter of fact I wish I had a car at that age too.

Absolutely you ought to get a job, even though the pay and jobs are terrible. This is a stepping-stone to bigger and better things, which can't be achieved from scratch. Use this as a stepping-stone as you learn adult responsibilities, so that when you're no longer a student you will have some real-world experience under the belt which will give you an adge-up over those who never had a job in high school.

Yes, it's a good idea to do that now and not wait until you are 30!
Seriously, I think it starts teaching a young person responsibility in handling their own finances and job duties. It looks good on your resume for more jobs in the future and as long as it's permitted by your parents and doesn't interfere with your grades at school , I'd say go for it!

If you still have some of your summer left then I think you should get a job at a store like Target is a good one but if you are starting school soon I think you should see how hard your classes are first and see if you will be able to handle a job as well as school and homework.

I don't think you or anyone should be driving at 16; the accident/death rate goes down significantly by 18. Insurance is a major expense that you are laying in your parents' laps besides the risk. I think you should devote yourself to your studies, go to college, mature, and get a high paying career where you can buy a series of cars and pay for your own insurance..
