get rid of the rats in your garage, You can find out if they are getting into the air filter area, place some hardward cloth in the opening. These critters are there usually because of a food source being close by. I had the same problem, only mice, I used to feed the dogs and cats in my garage. I had food available all the time, MY MISTAKE but the mice loved it. I bought a product called a tin cat, looks like a cigar box, with two opening and a ramp, mice goes in, ramp falls down because of it weight and ramp goes back up and traps the mouse. Works great, can catch 25 -40 mice in one night. I even put some food in there for bait. Only thing now is to empty live mice out, You can wait and they will eat each other or you can put the whole trap in a bucket of water for 15 minutes and now you have drowned rats.

Put a rat snake in there.
Seriously, I heard of a man in Savannah, Georgia who couldn't get his car started, opened the hood and there was a big snake coiled around the fanbelts. You're lucky it's rats.

Put some rat traps under the car or nearby.
