I have searched and searched and cannot find a thing about the cat walking across the bridge causing it to sway back and forth, this is my last resort, I would be grateful to anyone who has info on this myth!

A cat no. However A battalion of Soldiers crossing a bridge must break step because their synchronized heel stomps can cause problems.

I suppose if it was one of the giant, robotic cats from "Voltron", it would probably make the bridge shake.
Also, if you were to strap several sticks of dynamite to a cat and send it across the bridge, it might have an impact.

Imagine a single rope across a ravine. Certainly a squirrel could cross - why not a cat? And would one expect the rope to be stationary or to swing?

Either direction is fine, and Brooklyn is as worthy of being observed as is Manhattan. You would not want to turn "all the time". Every 50 to 100 yards is more than adequate.
