After i delievered my son and i was about to leave the hospital 2 days later, the nurse asked me if i would like a breast pump. it was free. it was a simple hand pump, but it worked GREAT. i tried using an expencive auto pump and it didnt do anything. i loved the simple hand pump.
and the bottles that came with it were nice and small (up to 4 ounces) and i used them for the first month and my son nvr had gas =]

About a year ago, it cost about $50/month (includes tax) for a friend to rent the pump from the hospital. Her insurance paid it for up to 3 months because she had a preemie, so her outlay was zero. She said it worked way better than the individual models you would normally buy, but once the baby was nursing well, it didn't make that much difference. It really helped when there wasn't a baby latching on.

Insurance will typically pay for the pump rental for a preemie, sick baby or baby unable to drink formula (allergy comes to mind). How long it is covered likely varies. The hospital may ask you, but more likely you would have to ask them. You will likely be referred to a lactation consultant or a medical supply place.

I rented at first. While the pump was only 40 a month, they took a deposit of 120. I also had to buy the accessories which was another 20. Even after they gave me my deposit back, I was still out $100. I ended up buying an electric Ameda double pump for $180. I wish I'd just bought the pump first because the money for renting it was a waste. Plus, now I have a pump that I have used for multiple kids.

I can't remember the exact cost. 8 years ago I rented a pump, and was still using it 6 months later. I called the place and just asked if I could purchase it since the rent was going to be higher than purchase if I kept using it.

If it's your first child, and you are planning on having more, I would consider buying a Medela. Otherwise, renting one will cost you more.

Or, rent it for the first month, see how nursing is going and then think of purchasing your own.

It cost me 30 bucks a month, and they lactation nurse told me about it, but it was offered through another hospital affiliate. Every hospital is different, and depending on you hospital stay they may or may not tell you. I suggest you ask, plenty of nurses will be in and out, ask them. By the way the hopital grade pump was totally worth it. I purchased a pump for around 130 and it was nothing like it, I only used it for travel because it was battery powered.

Here are their rates in VA: 1 week-$18, a month $75 and three months-$175, but also you have to buy your own kit from them which is another $40 but you keep it.

they usually refer you to a pharmacy or a medical supply store affiliated with the hospital, I think it was around $30 a month, but that was 5 yrs ago.
