It is more than likely that they were much more like animals in only going into heat a few times a year instead of monthly as we *sophisticated" humans do now, because predators would be hot on their trail if they left blood around once a month or even every week depending on how many women in the tribe and such.
It also likely that the women were pregnant before they would have gotten their period, I mean think of it, if you only ovulate twice a year and your boyfriend is a cave man, he is gonna smell those hormones and get busy knockin you up with the quickness! Men these days want sex everyday and hump your leg if you don't give it, imagine the needs and motivation of a caveman who only gets it two or three times a year!
Also women were breastfeeding a LOT longer than we do now, which cuts down on periods.
I think they just let it go down their legs otherwise.

From what would properly be desperate, human beings lived in kin communities. One clue for that's that at beginning, infants tend to look extra like the fathers than mothers. some advise this replaced into nature's way of "linking" the daddy to the youngster (the mummy is surprisingly plenty obtrusive). this means that the adult males had some typical jobs to find after their very own infants, subsequently, wanting to perceive them certainly. human beings are, for the main area, social animals. Consensual intercourse would have been the norm - a chuffed kin is a effective one! And, raising infants mutually would have been besides.

The women had one special place they went to and sat on leaves/furs etc. until it was over.
P>S> touching the food would taint it.
Indian women all went to a special hut just for that occasion.

There are monkey species that use rolled up leaves as sort of tampons.
There are tribes in Africa that sequester females during their menstrual cycle.
