PHD in physics. One chooses a specialty for a PHD. Quantum physics is not a specialty per se for the purposes of a dissertation topic since all fields of physics use it. Solid state and high energy physics use it most, though. Those are specialties. They are at opposite ends of the energy spectrum where things get "fundamental".

major in physics the 1st four years. once you get out of general mechanics and thermodynamics and all that good hoopla you should get into some quantum physics. b/c you'll need to see what its like before you decide to do that for a living. i attempted suicide twice trying to learn quantum theory. now i'm just an alcoholic who owns a bar in key west and i sail tourists out to an island.

Everything, all the physics, mathematics, chemistry, and science classes there are - and your life will feel like a final exam every day. It is a lifetime commitment.
