With that many miles, I would be worried about reliability. Thing will start to wear out. Did your neighbor maintain the car and have it serviced? have you driven the car, how does the engine sound? Are there any noises or clicks, thumping going on? Does it accelerate good and can you tell if there is any slipping in the tranmission?
You may want to have a mechanic inspect the car and give you a report on the condition and the compression of the pistons.
Good luck in school

i would not buy this car.... 240,000 is a lot of miles... A LOT... but im sort of in the same boat as you. i have a car i just bought with high mileage... before you make this decision, see if the car has a replaced engine on it. if it does, go for it. if it is still the same engine as when it was factory made... i would highly consider replacing the engine as soon as possible. which could run you up a couple thousand dollars (but i just asked that question about a minute before you.) if you dont replace the engine i can tell you right now... it probably will not last your college years... like i said, buy it if you have enough to get that old engine out of there and get a brand new one that will give you an additional ten years or more on the road.
as for how much time it would have left... like i told you... that car will be done before you get your degree.

Is it one owner vehicle?
Are the 240 HWY miles?
How are the tires and brakes?
Is it rusty?
Is there any leaks?
What kind of engine does it have?
Lot of questions to ask before making a decision.
If you I don't know the history of the vehicle, with this kind of mileage I would check out another one.
Good luck!

take the car to a mechanic and have them look it over carefully. if it passes inspection, then buy the car if you like it. as long as the car is in good condition, mileage doesnt mean anything.

My old Volvo 145 went around the world 10 times. By then, I felt it was too dangerous to sell, so I took it to a junk yard and let them turn it into a sub, sub, sub compact.
Forget it! You want safe and reliable! You get 1 body. Try to keep it.

My mom has a 1994 Dodge Ram B250 Van w/ almost 250K on it and barely burns any oil but other than that as long as you keep up on it shouldn't have to worry and as long as you drive it SENSIBLE it will last.

if it still looks like new , I mean NEW... then he took care of it enough to get a few thousand more.
If there is anything ugly about it, he is just saving himself a trip to the junkyard.

No!
i don't think you should buy it, because if you buy, then you have to fix alot stuff, and it going to be cost more than the prize you buy the car!
