Okay my friend took his car to an auto shop to have it checked out. He only wanted to know what the problem was. He made this very clear when he took the car in. So instead of telling him what's the problem, they went ahead and fixed the car. They left a voicemail saying they fixed it and he owes $350. He doesn't think he should have to pay for it because he was just trying to find out the problem. He's going to talk to them tomorrow. What do you think?

My friend had no problem paying the fee to have the car looked at. He just didn't want to pay to get it fixed because he didn't know what the cost would be.

I own a auto shop and if your friend didn't sign a consent for repair they cant charge you for repairs, go in if they try to force you into paying call the authorities.

A lot of the time, when you drop the car off, you sign a form that gives them the authority to repair the car and do what they have to, in order to fix it.

If your friend signed this statement, then he did in fact, authorize them to repair the car.

I don't know what was wrong with it, but for $350 it doesn't sound too bad. Considering that they will most likely charge him $100 for the information to check it out. Put it on the computer, and labor.

I think he should pay it, but if he feels ripped off then never take another car there again.

Many shops have a policy that limits the repairs they do without express authorization, but tell you anything under a certain amount will be done automatically unless you specifically request, in writing, estimate only, no repairs, but then you agree to a labour cost for the estimate, anyway.

when he took the car in, he should have signed a work order with an estimate on it. If he didn't authorize $350 he doesn't have to pay.
