any internal combustion engine produces emissions from the fuel they burn. perfect combustion with a gas engine produces carbon dioxide and water. diesel is also a hydrocarbon fuel, and it produces similar combustion by products, with two added ones, sulfur dioxide, and what is known as particulate emissions. the sulfur dioxide is a result of the sulfur in diesel fuel, and the particulate emissions are a result of the fuel burning, and hard particles being created as a result of the paraffin wax in the diesel fuel.
