Yes I do believe in MPD or as it is also known Dissociative Identity Disorder. I have lived with a person with MPD and have read about it. The mind is an amazing thing that is able to do impressive things to protect itself. People are able to block things out of their mind and memory such as abuse or other traumatic events. MPD is basically an extension of this where a completely separate 'Personality' is created to take the abuse and hold the memory. MPD is generally caused by serious physical and usually sexual abuse before a verbal age. The mind is not able to handle the amount of trauma in its entirety and needs to compartmentalize it to function. It is called a disorder, but it works extremely well in allowing people to function in society. People with MPD are survivors who deserve our respect.

Yes, but I'm not sure it is a "disorder" .. just because someone has more than one personality doesn't necessarily make them dysfunctional. Someone mentioned that it's common in survivors of abuse - well not exactly .. most abuse survivors DON'T develop multiple personalities, but most people with multiple personalities often are survivors of some form of repeated and traumatic childhood abuse.
I also think that a lot of people use the term too lightly - if someone behaves one way in one situation and another in a different one (e.g. being all businesslike with colleagues, then being babyish with a lover) that is NOT about multiple personalities, that is just playing different roles, donning different masks. A person with multiple personalities might be more likely to do it the other way around ..
It's pretty complex and your best source for answers on this is NOT from us general public .. you should probably check out some of the official sites

Yes, some people are so able to compartmentalize bad things that have happened to them that they shut those times and situations out of their everyday mental consciousness. In some cases they do assign a different personality to take care of certain business. You may notice this in yourself, if you have a "business personality" that is different from the laid back personality you live at home, or the fun guy you become around your friends. The people who suffer from this disorder, simply do it on a more thoroughly rigid set of levels that do not interlap at all.

technically, there's no such thing as MPD. now it's called dissociative identity disorder (DID). and yes, i believe in it, however i believe many people fake it.
i'm not sure how to explain to you why i do -- that would be like asking why do we have 10 fingers instead of 12. i don't know, it's just how it is.
