Because nobody wants to be the first to let it go. Everyone, no matter what race you are, has had racial comments directed at them. When that happens, it undoes some of the color-blindness we should all have and we have to struggle not to fall into stereotyping an entire group of people as being racist. It's not right, but it happens. I don't think most people could be classified as completely racist. I think everyone is a little unsure how others perceive them or how others will judge them so they don't even give them a chance. Each generation sees some improvement though. My kids don't seem to notice the difference between races yet and they are 6 & 8. I'm sure some uneducated dolt will ruin that for them sooner or later, but right now my kids don't see people as black, white, Latino, Asian or anything else. I think that's a good thing.

The problem is that some people are able to see the media, the jails, and living in society and they are able to see differences in the races. You just don't see too many whites in street gangs and they are almost always the man who is hiring you for a job. It makes it really easy to think one race is better than others.
I love my black people, but we have to do better ourselves. Hip-hop culture is ruining us and creating racists. Some people are racists because they are, but others are just seeing a biased society.

It has nothing to do with understanding what you want the problem is you want everyone to think like you.
We all have different experiences in life which lead to different views, beliefs and thoughts and opinions. We are not robots but human.

while there has probably always been certain levels of xenophobia (fear of peopel who are different/foreigners), the age of imperialism/colonialism really kicked it up a lot, when peopel of certain skin colors/ethnicities were limited/forced into certain roles - and even their children of mixed heritage were also limited.
Descendents of both the imperialists and their victims are still shaped by the sheer intensity of that era (roughly 1440 to 1970), and it will take some time for all parties to truly get over it.
