You have noticed that when the first baseman approaches the dugout a baseball is tossed to him.
I asked that question the last time I went to a game and was told by one of the coaches that it's a "time-saver". When the inning is over and the players take the field he already has the warm-up ball. He just grabs his glove and goes.

That is the warm up ball for when they take the field the next inning to soft toss. Its been a long standing tradition

I beg to differ, all the balls that major leaguers use are all brand new, they are so rich, that is MLB that they have thousands of brand new baseballs to waste and give out to the fans, thats why all bp balls are brand new, money is not an issue in baseball, its the quality of the ball, not too slippery and not too rough

its for warm ups the next inning and its not a new baseball just a slightly used one.
