From a Biblical perspective each generation is further away from the original perfection that Adam & Eve intially enjoyed. So earlier generations would not suffer from as many inherited problems, but each sucessive generation would have more.
A non Biblical explanation is that often historical records did not include any information that reflected badly on the ruling class. So it would be rare that any deformities would be directly mentioned. There are still plenty of historical records that prove that inbreeding causes defects and inherited health problems.

Have you read about some of those nut-jobs that ruled the ancient worlds? Man there were some real sickos out there. There was something wrong with the alright. May not have always been physical, but there was definitely something going on there.

Several physical and mental casesare documented in England's royal blood line.
Even Caligula and a couple of ceasars were, shall we say, twisted?
