Is there reliable evidence for the final resting place of Alexander the Great? I know the sarcophagus is on display in Istanbul, but what happened to his remains?

He was buried in Alexandria. Several accounts exist of Romans visiting it. The tomb was probably destroyed in the third century AD.
The sarcophagus on show in Istanbul is called the Alexander sarcophagus because it shows scenes from his campaigns. It did not belong to Alexander, but to the King of Sidon I believe.

The reliable evidence is the enormous tourist trade that began because of his arrival in Alexandria. Caesar and Augustus both visit Alexander's Grave during their engagements with Cleopatra.
It is theorized that the grave site was destroyed in the earthquake that destroyed the Pharlos Lighthouse.

After hearing a podcast about this, it was Ptolemy who stole the body of Alexander and whisked it away to Egypt. The thing was that whoever buried Alexander got to inherit his empire.

However, his remains are unknown. My college professor asked us this question (paraphrasing her, of course) "how many of you are willing to risk life and limb in the Middle East to find Alexander's body?" A number of students raised their hands, including my professor.

I, however, did not raise my hand. Ancient history isn't my forte (see source list for my specialty).

There is no evidence only rumours. Alexandria is one place that claims him.
