Salem is a total tourists trap, but highly entertaining. The cheesy witch museums are fun (the Witch Dungoen Museum was my favourite. They had a short skit and the tour guide was awesome), but if you want something real take a walk through Derby Square for some nice pictures, visit the Witch Trial Memorial (its very sobering after seeing all the kitsch and camp associted with witches) and spend the afternoon in the Peabody Essex Museum. It's full of really awesome exotic antiques, shipping paraphinlia and american art.

Good luck getting out to the Cape (or back from it) on a summer weekend. If you look at the Cape on a map, you'll see how narrow it is. There's basically one main road everyone uses, and it's nothing but traffic all weekend.
Salem probably won't be too bad, but there's really not much there, and what is there is pretty tacky.
I suggest Newport, RI. It's less than an hour away from Boston by car (closer than most points of Cape Cod) and is a great little city. The beaches are the best in New England, amd you can tour the historic mansions (once owned by Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, etc.). There are hundreds of restaurants to choose from as well. It's a bit touristy in the summer, but not nearly as bad as the Cape.
Check out www.tablehound.com -- an interactive guide to Newport restaurants. You can find other information on www.gonewport.com.

If you're looking for history, you are still probably better off in Salem. Besides the fact, you'll have to count on travel time if you only have one day at the destination. Assuming you're landing at Logan, getting to the Cape is going to take at least an hour and a half, maybe more depending on what city you decide on. Salem would take about 45 minutes. So that might make part of your decision right there! . . The Cape is pretty fun, and you can go to the beach, and get some good sea food, play mini golf, maybe go to the aquarium (Woods Hole) if you decide on that. . . And that would be in any city really. . . . .Either one can be enjoyable though. Have fun!

Salem, I live on cape cod and there is so much to do but I went to Salem and I was bored in a few hours. There is a lot of history but there wasn't much to do and it wasn't what I was expecting. Not to say i was disappointed, but it would be better to go there with only a few hours than the cape.

If you are only going to spend the rest of the day, it's easier to see Salem. its about a 45 minute to 1 hr drive from Logan.
There is a lot of history to see and read about in Salem such as the witch trials, etc.
If you go to Cape Cod (not Code), it takes about 90 minutes to two hours from Logan depending on traffic.
There's plenty to do there on the Cape, including walking in Hyannisport, eating in fish places, beach going, etc.
There are also concerts at the cape Cod Melody tent every weekend in the summer as well as plenty of restaraunts with entertainment .
Enjoy!

Salem you don't really have enough time for the Cape. House of seven gables and the Peabody museum are great.
