If a team is a man short for a designated hitter for whatever reason...can the manager of the team hit in the DH spot?

Yes, but only if he is on the active player roster, which is most likely not the case. No current MLB managers are on the active player roster. It would be more likely to see something like that happen in the minors where they are constantly shuffling players. Not likely in MLB.

The manager would have to be a player/manager and on the active 25 man roster which none of the current managers are. If a team somehow uses up all their bench players in a game and needed a DH, then the pitchers would have to hit. In a case where the DH has to replace a player on the field because of an injury and what not, then the DH would become a fielder and the pitchers would have to go to bat wherever the injured players position was in the lineup while the former DH keeps his same spot in the lineup.

There have been player managers (Pete Rose was the latest), but the manager does have to be on the 25-man roster. Only players on the 25-man roster, or the expanded roster in September can play in a major league game.

no. the manager is not on the roster. besides, i seriously doubt you'd ever want your manager hitting. you're in pretty dire straights if you need your manager to hit...you're def better off with a pitcher hitting...

then again, i'm a NL girl, so i don't know much about DHs.

Not unless he's an active player, or it's a late-March spring training blowout when no one cares.
