Shouldn't the question have been, "Who was Yasser Arafat?"
Yasser Arafat was a rebel leader and a founder of the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organisation). Israel occupied the whole of Palestine and the PLO was set up to free the Palestinians. However, most of the world recognised Palestine and the PLO. They recognised the PLO as legitimate freedom fighters. However, both Israel and the US would not recognise neither Palestine nor the PLO. They declared that the PLO were terrorists. However, International pressure made both the US and Israel allow Yasser Arrafat to leave Palestine to attend International summits. The US refused to attend. This brought about more International pressure and although Israel still wouldn't recognise Palestine, the US had to. As the US had lost it's argument that Yasser Arafat is a terrorist and Palestine doesn't exist (it is Israel), the US had no choice but to assist in helping the PLO take control through a Palestinian Government. Right up until Yasser Arafat's death, Israel would still try to assassinate Yasser Arafat and his family (including women and children), still declared that he was a terrorist and still shelled and bombed the West Bank and Ghazza. When Yasser Arafat died, Israel joined other world leaders in praising him for the good that he had done. How hypocritical! Today's view from the Israeli's is that Yasser was a terrorist and so are all PLO members. His death almost brought peace to the region but once again, Israel wants to dictate and continues to bomb women and children, with US support, arms and money. Israel will never adhere to any treaty and will attack Palestine for no reason and then blame the Palestinians. Yasser Arafat is in the history books as a great leader of Palestine and a leader that tried to bring peace until all avenues were exhausted. However, in US and Israeli history books, he was just a terrorist.
