They are two factions, among many.

Currently, the Iraqi PM and most of the parliament is Shiite.

Previously, Saddam was Baathist.

Previously, the Shitties (being a minority) were supressed by the Sunni whenever the Sunni could get away with it.

Al Qaeda is Sunni. So is Saudi Arabia.

Iran is Shiite.

Sunnis and Shittes fight each other a lot.

Same role of Catholics and Protestants in US but with more serious fights.
