When driving a motorcycle, are you expected to weave in between cars as they are stopped at the traffic light? I see many other motorists doing this but I'm always afraid to... is it okay if I stay in line with everyone else? I feel as though I'm expected to drive up to the front of the line just because I'm on a motorcyle...

"r u expected to weave in between cars?"

What you have been observing is perfectly legal behavior in California, whether you choose to do it is entirely up to you. Sharing a lane can be one of the safest places to ride your motorcycle, give yourself some time (at least a couple of years) to improve your skills, I believe that you will either start sharing lanes or give up riding altogether.

One thing to never forget when you share a lane with another vehicle is that the motorcyclist is always responsible for anything that happens, this means that you must not only be fully awake and alert, but on your guard every moment for it is only you and them, and chances are 'they' won't even see you!

If you have questions on that - you should probably look into taking a motorcycle riders course - ABATE www.abateofcolo.org (this is the Colorado link - if you do a search by your state, you will get the link for your state) offers courses around the country and they are very good. They can tell you what the laws are in your state, help you gain confidence and become a better rider. As far as weaving through the traffic, being a rather new rider - I would never do it - would never know when a car might decide to come into my lane and take me out - and it is not worth it to me to get ahead a few car lenghts.

In the USA, lane splitting is only legal in California. The CHP says, “Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner.” California lacks specific guidelines as to what is a safe and prudent manner. Two factors used to determine whether squeezing past traffic was done in a safe and prudent manner are the speed of the motorcycle and the speed of the surrounding traffic.

The law allows you to go between the cars, but nobody will think less of you or even care if you stay in line. It's really a matter of personal preference. Some bikers have to do it because their engines are air cooled and staying in one place for a long time will cause them to overheat. I tend to stay in the line unless it's realllly long and i'm feeling impatient.

Although totally illegal(not in Japan!! LOL), a lot of people do it. If you're afraid for any reason like being caught or not being able to maneuver through properly, don't bother with it. You're completely right to stay in line with the rest of traffic.

This is illegal...kind of like cutting in line just because your vehicle is small enough to do so. Usually the first time you get cut off trying to do this move they will stop. I live in Atlanta where traffic splitting seems to be the norm.

Only in California. You're not expected to, you can ride how you want. If you don't feel safe splitting the lane, then don't do it. Ride in a capacity that feels safe with you. Otherwise it's too dangerous.

its not illegal in some states but a cop can give you a ticket for careless & imprudent if hes in a bad mood. its best to do it while the cars are going 35 mph or more if you do it while cars are stopped in a jam some women will try to get you with their door, guys just cuss or honk at you. you dont look too intimidating, maybe you should just be polite & wait in line.

What they are doing is illegal. If a cop sees it, he will write a ticket for improper lane usage, and if given a hard time, will add reckless driving, and if near a walkway, public endangerment. Just ride like a normal, safe minded person and you will be fine. Let the showoffs get the tickets and hurt themselves.
