My mother passed away about a year and a half ago, after that my dad went crazy. He has been openining credit cards in my name (3), and has been taking money from my checking account(I have taken it all out)and now I cant even get financial aid or a mortgage because of it. I am torn because he is my only parent left(I am an only child) and dont want to take him to court, but I cant afford to pay for the thousands of dollars he has racked up on my credit. I dont know what to do and have no one to talk to. Please, anyone who has been through this or is financially savvy PLEASE help!!

Thanks

You have to call the police and report your father's crimes. Otherwise you are admitting that all of this is your debt, and you agree to pay for it. And it will remain on your credit report and haunt you for the next decade at least.

Nicole,

The only option you have is to file a police report against him so that you will not be held financially responsible for what your father has done. If you don't take a warrant out on your father, you will be stuck with all the bills.

Do not feel guilty for doing this. You will be protecting yourself and your own financial health. Your Dad was not feeling guilty when he did this to you, was he? What he has done is called identity theft!!!

I am so sorry for the loss of your mother and for what you are going through with your Dad. It sounds like he may have just lost his mind and gone crazy with the financial things he is doing.

Also, sit down with the experts at your local bank and talk to them about all that is happened. They can guide you through what you have to do to protect yourself.

Good luck with everything!

You must sit and talk it through with him, somehow he must pay you back for the amount he has taken. How did he open up 3 cards in your name ?Report it to the credit companies and explain they were not opened by you.Explain that your Dad has been ill.If you don't they will pursue you for all the costs ,interest ,payments etc.Ask advice also from a Financial Advisor they are trained to deal with this kind of situation. How long have you been aware of him doing this ? Do not be blined by emotional, feelings over this. Its serious and has to be dealt with in a practical way if you are ever to have any peace of mind.

Your father is committing fraud, and using you as his source. If you want to straighten out YOUR credit, you're going to have to ruin your father's and possibly see him do a bit of prison time.

Unless you report this identity theft to the authorities, all involved will properly assume that YOU have opened these credit cards and run up this debt. The only way to change that is to report your father as a thief. I recommend that you do so ASAP..

First, try to calmly discuss it with him. Suggest a credit councellor. If that doesn't work, then I am affraid that your only choices are to take him to court, or let it keep happening. The threat of taking him to court might be all you need however. Good luck.
