There was a missing start-up image and the computer shop I called said to do a system recovery and now it just says "HTLDR or NTLDR is compressed. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart."

You must have done something not persuant to the advise given to you over the phone, NTLDR is a bootup loader and needs to be fixed by the installation disc, Windows XP probably, the screen first will prompt you to do a fix or install. Take the fix route, and when being asked to don't choose to drop down to the Console that's something only experts do. Four repair procedure options will show only one of them fix the problem you have.
