G'Day geoffrey s,
The first answer is correct, "Have you disconnected the shift rod?"....O.K. this is what you have to do, put the shift lever in the "F" or "R", when you do this take note of the lower unit it should lift or drop slightly, you want it in the dropped position. Now look into the cavity, you should see a rod, this is the gear box selection rod. Look up the rod and you will see a brass/bronze connector block with two small bolts in it. Take a spanner and undo the lower bolt and remove it, when you are removing it support the lower unit, once out it should slip out, if not gently use a screw-driver and pry apart the block where the split is. Avoid using to much force as you can break parts very easily.
The water pump is located on the lower unit which has the drive shaft through the center of it. Once the pump has been replaced, assembly is just a reversal of the above, taking special note that the water tube from the pump fits into the power head right if not you will not get cooling water to the head and block and may cause sever damage.
It sounds complicated but I have done several and even though each brand is slightly different in dis-assembly but are basically the same in the pump. Another member mentioned the little "fin" above the prop, this is a sacrificial anode and yes some do have a bolt in them that must be removed, but from memory yours does not. If you find the anode pitted don't worry that's a good sign, that is supposed to happen, if it's really bad just replace it. Hope this has helped.

There is a little thing that looks like a fin sticking down right behind the prop, usually at a bit of an angle to counteract torque thrust.
Take that off, some motors are held together by the bolt holding that in.
Not sure about that particualr motor but that's the next place I would look.

Depends what yr under the carb there's a 3/8 bolt move the shifter fwr to rev u will see it moving? Or when the lower unit splits 1/2" in the front there might be a 3/8 bolt to release the shift linkage.Put in rev will lower it down .

You have to remove the starter if you have one, (actually you can unbolt 2 out of the 3 bolts on it, and swing it out of the way), then disconect the shift linkage behind the starter, have the lower untit "Braced" as it will fall as soon as you disconnect the shift linkage.
