Quite Frankly I love Star Trek. Even though I also like Star Wars, Star Trek has more to it other than blow something up and call it a day. It's about bettering one's self and working toward peace for everyone no matter what race, species, or government.
And, as the opening sequence in TNG (The Next Generation) says, it's also about "to boldly go where no one has go before."

I used to like Star Trek but it's kind of gotten really stupid lately. I don't know why trekies are referred to as geeks because that seems to imply some sort of intelligence and lately Star Trek has become the most unintellectual thing I have ever seen. If someone really is a nerd or a geek or whatever it seems like they would prefer the discovery channel of the history channel. I personally love both of those channels so I'm obviosly a nerd.

well, I'm a star trek hater...well not so much hater, but would never watch it. I think I would've been introduced too late in the game to ever try to understand it.
I think its lame to call them geeks, just b/c they like this show, I mean something must be right, its been on for so long. But I think its because some Trekkie's are too into it, after all The Simpson's "Comic book guy" was based off of someone right?

Fans of certain types of things/people are mocked when they get so much "into" something that they become obsessed. This preoccupation causes them to become out of touch with the "real" world. While it may not be obvious to them, it is to others that the line between the TV show and reality has become blurred, and they are living in an artificial world. Also, when a person becomes obsessed with one thing, they tend to let their appearance and surroundings go. This neglect sends a message to others that they are odd, and they are avoided. It was reported at a Star Trek convention that even William Shatner (Capt. Kirk) was so alarmed at the obsession of some of the fans that he told them they needed to "get a life!"

They are also called 'Trekkies'.
One reason for the 'geek' label is that the guys who like science fiction are often very shy and introverted. They often don't have girlfriends and still live with their Mother at age 37.
There was a great & funny spoof of this by William Shatner on an episode of Saturday Night Live.

I like Star Trek, but I do not dress up like them, wear make up to look like a Klingon, go to "Trekkie" conventions or act out scripts.
Those are the geeks.

Actually, we're usually referred to as NERDS - which implies Intelligence ;););)
But according to Wikipedia: "The word geek has recently come to be used to refer to a person who is fascinated by knowledge and imagination, usually electronic or virtual in nature."
SO I guess that's a better word after all ;);)

It's just the ones who are fat, dress up as charecters at conventions, know all the lingo, and live in their parents basement. Just liking the program doesn't make anyone a geek.
