I read in a book that tells you how to care for a red eared slider and it said that if you mix plaster of Paris with water and let it harden, it could be used for extra calcium. Is this true? I want professional answers please because I don't want my turtle to be sick.

A well balanced diet and proper lighting works. You can also use calcium blocks for turtles, cuttlebone and EGG SHELLS.

I would not suggest plaster of paris!!

If a well-balanced diet is provided, most turtles, especially adults, will not require a lot of additional vitamin supplementation. However, rapidly growing hatchlings and females producing eggs can benefit from extra vitamins and calcium. One easy means of providing more calcium is in the form of a calcium block. Calcium carbonate, in the form of Plaster of Paris, is mixed with water, poured into molds, and allowed to solidify. A vitamin powder can be added while the Plaster of Paris is still liquid. Art supply stores are a good source of Plaster of Paris. Before purchasing it, check the ingredients list to verify that no anti-fungal compounds have been added.

This was from a turtle website I found, but I also think it is easier and cheaper just to buy one at the pet store. They last a long time.

that will kill your turtle! plaster of paris is a clay...it is NOT made of edible materials so therefor it is not used for extra calcium. u can go get cuttle bone's out of the bird section at the pet store...they work for turtles too - theyll get calcium AND nutrients from that cuz that is an actual cuttle fish bone...its not man made. just go out and get u a cuttle bone from the pet store...those little turtle calcium things that that other person was talking about doesnt work that well and it is likely to make the water cloudy therefor u would have to change it more often and it would get expensive to keep buying those...

Your best bet is to buy a calcium block from your local pet store or even Wal-Mart. They are in the pet section and are shaped like a little white turtle. You just drop it in your tank and it lasts a good while. They are inexpensive too, just a couple of dollars!
