Married couples in the early 50s could not be shown sleeping in the same bed. Also, when Lucy got pregnant, she could not say the word. She said, "We're going to have a baby" or "Ethel, I"m with child." To think that we, as a people thought that was the way people lived, is comical today. However, it is true that parents did not swear in front of children, did not "do it" in presence of children in house until after they went to bed, etc., that is why those of us who grew up in and about that time grew up with values that didn't have a chance once the 60s came in. It was woefully unrealistic, of course, but it was better to grow up with values, morals and ethics as opposed to what little ones have today: In your face nudity, four letter words, porno on demand, parents who drink, smoke and "do it" in and about the children. There are few children running the streeets any more. It's too late and children have seen it and done it all by the time they are eight depending upon where they live and what their ethnicity and cultures are. Sorry, folks.

In those days the rules were that two people of opposite gender in the same bed was too dirty to let the viewers see. It was a breakthrough for those days when they even showed Lucy was pregnant (although how she got pregnant being in a separate bed was never made clear)

At the time that show was on (1950s), there were a number of subjects that were taboo for television, sex being one. You could not show a couple in the same bed, you couldn't show a woman in a two-piece swimsuit, you couldn't even mention the word "pregnant". When Lucy became pregnant it was said on the show that she was "in a family way".

Lucy was a bed wetter. Ricky didn't earn enough singing to buy a decent wet suit. He didn't know he could just buy plastic sheets.

That is because in the 1950s, sex was a taboo subject, (unlike the freedom we now have) and therefore there could not be any hints as to men and women sleeping together, even if they were married.

Mostly because it's an old show and it was considered inappropriate at the time. The first TV couple to be shown sharing a bed was actually Wilma and Fred Flinstone, believe it or not.
