I watch a lot of movies every year (probably 100+ in theatres and at least that many more on DVD). And I can recognize the difference between a well made movie that I just didn't like (The Queen is an example that comes to mind) and a bad movie (Norbit, Epic Movie, etc).

I give credit to a movie that had good acting and/or production values but just doesn't have an interesting or well executed story. However, I'm tired of these dumb comedies Hollywood keeps churning out just for the sake of making money. Most of them only have the thinest thread of a story and it's like they are just throwing out as many "jokes" and sight gags as they can in hopes something works. The same goes for most horror movies and a lot of action movies (or at least was the case when Hollywood was making a lot of action movies).

Absolutely. Prime example: I think Saving Private Ryan is an exceptionally good movie, but I didn't like it at all. On the other hand, Weekend at Bernie's is a terrible movie, and I love it. Maybe I should've kept that last bit to myself...

I guess the right question would be what makes a good movie a good movie? Ticket sales? Reviews? Although I typically can tell if a movie is really a good piece of work or just crap. Doesn't mean that I necessarily like the good ones and not like the crappy ones. I'm no movie expert so I just always assume my feeling about a movie to be only my opinion, not a reflection of how "good" a movie actually is.

I admit that I'm often biased... though I can usually give a movie credit where credit is due. I agree about the quality of most comedies coming out these days... and horror movies, so often a good idea is ruined by poor movie making x_x

Good point.

Well, even movies that I don't like I can still appreciate if there are certain qualities that it has that I'll give it points for.

Independence Day and Starship Troopers are 2 movies that make absolutely no sense whatsoever, but I let them pass because they ARE popcorn movies.

You're NOT supposed to think too much on these movies, just watch, eat your popcorn and enjoy the ride.

Bad movies are movies that are SO horrendous you can't even make fun of because they are so bad, and they just sap all the life out of you.

Yes I can tell the difference.
I do agree with you too, I very rarely see comedies any more because the are so inane.
What ever happened to great dialog?
In my opinion they spend too much money on the actors salaries and do not pay the writers well enough. And of course you get what you pay for.
The audience is the ones that suffers though.

For sure. I love some horrible movies. Toxic Avenger is an all time favorite, it's HORRIBLE but I love it. Babel is a terrific movie, but I did not like it at all.
I can appreciate a good movie, that don't mean have to like it. I would rather be entertained by a bad movie than moved by a good one.

Yes of course.... and there is also the opposite, a movie you know that sucks, but that you love, like i do with some old horror and b-movies

It is all a matter of opinion. If I think a movie stinks then in my opinion it is a bad movie. If I don't like a movie and people tell me what a great movie it is I do not have to agree with them and thats my opinion.
