I think I have a problem with my brakes, but I'm not sure. When I hit the brakes in general nothing happens. But I hear grinding when I'm braking to a stop (the last few seconds) or turning sharply at low speeds.

Jack it up and pull the wheels. Take a close look at the rotors. Any scoring or grooves means time to replace pads and get rotors turned. If all good, pull the drums and inspect rear shoes and drums. Or rear rotors and pads if so equipped. Same deal, inspect closely for scoring or grooves. If find no problem with the brakes, the pads may actually be glazed from excessive heat. This can be perceived as a grinding as well, though it is actually a shudder. The pads and rotors will still need to be resurfaced to correct this condition.

The grinding you hear is metal on metal, Don't drive the car until you get new brakes, My son had the same problem he could not believe it , I told him to bring it over and we would fix he was surprised, hope this helps.

I would fallow bartzan41's advise.
Also sometimes people change the brake pads and forget to put new shims or to glue them. Even if the pads and rotors look good, I'd make sure that shims are installed and installed right.

Good luck
